Dear Friends:

I am so pleased at the number of you who have asked about the progress of BLADE OF EMPIRE. The short answer is: the manuscript is half-finished, and in another hundred thousand words I will hand it over to my editor at Tor. I expect to do this in August or early September of this year.

I feel very bad at the long delay between the previous book and this one. It has been said that a writer has no obligation to his audience beyond producing whatever book they currently hold in their hands: I believe a writer who starts a story has an obligation to his audience to finish it. When a writer says: let me tell you a story… his audience expects exactly that: a story with a beginning, a middle, and (most of all) an end. By beginning a story, a writer assumes the obligation to finish it. This is an obligation I take very seriously.

Of course, Life Happens. My editor wanted me to write another book in between CROWN OF VENGEANCE and BLADE OF EMPIRE. When I was in the middle of BLADE, I had to drop everything to deal with a family emergency. But as I say, the book is back on track now and soon to be done.

So when will it come out? In Publishing, the old school rule of thumb was twelve months from delivery to publication, which would put BLADE on the 2015 schedule. In addition, though a book can be released in any month of the year, for certain publicity and record-keeping purposes (as well as catalogue appearances), it is assigned to a “list”. Most publishers these days do only a Spring and a Fall list (back in Publishing’s glory days, there were four seasonal lists. Of course, Maxwell Perkins was alive then): conventional wisdom says that the Spring List contains the “beach books” and the Fall List contains the “gift books” – ie, the ones people will give as gifts that December. I suspect Tor thinks of the World of Obsidian books as “gift books”, which means BLADE would be on the Fall list, which covers (very roughly) September through February of the following year, and be released sometime before the December gift-giving season.

But at this point, I have no real information on publication date, just educated guesses. Nobody can really start juggling schedules until the book is not only turned in, but is submitted to Production, which means the editor has read it and I've made the revision she indicates.

When I know more, I’ll let you know. Knowing that there’s someone out there waiting to see what happens next is a wonderful encouragement to any storyteller, and I am grateful for all of you.

BLADE OF EMPIRE UPDATE

Thank you SOOO much for this update. I have been excitedly waiting for book 2 in "The Dragon Prophecy" series since reading the first one. I can count on one hand how books I have read straight through without putting it down (save to go to the bathroom, etc.), and "Crown of Vengeance" is on that list. What a great novel. I simply loved it (long, unpronounceable names and all. LoL). Thanks again for the update.

BLADE OF EMPIRE UPDATE

Thank you for creating another excellent story in the Obsidian World setting. The Obsidian Trilogy is still up there as one of my top favorite trilogies, and the Dragon Prophecy is proving to be another interesting story. I only have one "complaint", though (if you can call it that). I love your stories and the intricacies of the plot, but the names make my head ache! I have this mental imagine of reading them out loud with a mouth full of marbles. Would it be possible to put in a glossary at the end of book two for all the italicized words, along with the phonetic pronunciation of all the names? If not in the book, would you consider taking the time to post it on the web? I can't be the only one wondering if it's Vee'-lee-sar, Vey'-lee-sar, Vey-lee'-sar, Vey-ley'-sar, Vey-ley-sar', or some other contortion of the possible sound variants, not to mention all the other names. Help!

Thank you, once again. I love the read, even if I can't pronounce the names. ;)

Very sad that it is taking so very very long to release Book 2. Not impressed with your editor wanting another book before Blade is release...that's no thinking of your readers. I just hope the book will be worth waiting over 2 years!

Thank you can't wait

I just wanted to say thank you for writing such wonderful series and I like all of your fans anxiously await Blade of Empire. I also just wanted to express my thanks that you have woven such a rich tapestry of a world that continues to tell the story. I am an avid reader of Science Fiction/Fantasy and so many time I have read Trilogies or multiple books in a series etc. and while the stories have all been great they always left me wanting more. I always wanted to know what happens next in the story many years down the road and how the heroes of one book are viewed in history in a new series. Too many people leave that out or never follow up. Seeing the characters come to life after reading about them in the other books is so refreshing and delightful and that is why I believe your books are some of the best I have read. Keep of the good work and continue to write. Go back and write about Amrethion and Peleshia so much out there. Thank you again.

Since it's now the end of November, I was wondering if there were any updates for Blades. Has the manuscript gone to the publisher yet?

Waiting impatiently here in Florida! I have read all of both of yours/Lackey's books in the past years and frankly found this one to have more substance. Really good read, not totally predictable. Enjoyed it about ten times now and waiting for Blades. Wish Amazon would take down their inaccurate listing!

Also waiting for the second of this series. I love the complicated names and have read the first book so many times that I dont have a problem pronouncing them...even if they are not the exact way they were envisioned. Tor should put this book for publication on the spring go to beach list. It should be read during leisure time...on plane..in beach chair. It wont interfere with activities because it will be read quickly, and then re-read for leisure. It should NOT be on the winter list because unless the entire series is given at one time as a gift, it is not nice to give somebody the middle story of a book when the tail end might be another 2 years away. Doesnt make sense. Of the whole series, the dragon prophecy is by far the most compelling and the writing is wonderfully challenging and sophisticated. Very very very good read but the waiting is worse than for the second of the Ravens shadow.

Thank you for the 'tons of dragons' teaser. is there anyway you can find out if Tor is doing the spring g or fall release and let us know? If I know when the book will be released (and I think others share this feeling) then I can say OK just need to have patience.
Thanks in advance, Taliesinharps

It's been roughly 8 months since you posted anything here..at least that I can find. I know we are all hounding you about blade and maybe that's the reason for your absence. But I will admit that I am a little concerned. Are you alright? You didn't have a wreck or find you have a serious illness? That would be awful and I sincerely hope is not the case. If you are OK and simply working your fingers to the nub then I apologize and wish you all success. If you are not well then know our prayers will be with you.

I listen to books on my daily commute and usually don't allow myself to listen to them outside of that hour per day. However, I could barely get myself to go into the office, and a few times tried to slip out and listen to it in the middle of the day.

I finished Crown of Vengeance this morning (note: NOT a workday) and can still barely breathe. I have been searching for the publishing date on the next book and finally came across this. Thank you so much for taking time to give these updates. One never knows what is going on with authors since we don't generally have the same visibility into your lives that we have into movie and TV stars'. (I assume that's a good thing for writers...who wants to dodge paparazzi, right?). Seriously, though, I'm glad everything is well, and I wish you many words, and much peace.

I have been re-reading the Obsidian Mountain Triology recently. Will you be writing a series about the Second War? I have so many questions! What happened to the Other Kellon? How did the other races die? Bearwards, merfolk etc. What were they like? How did the war mages fight? Why did the Endangered take to field? Were there knight mages? Multiple? What was the land like before it was razed? What battles were fought? How was the pass held against the endarkened? I have so many questions! Please write about the Second War!

I am done with Tor books I do not like that there are no updates at all from your publisher I am sorry that you have to work for them but I did enjoy your books but enough is enough. maybe when your publisher realized that they are loosing customers they will get on the ball.

You book is 1 of 4 books that Tor is supposed to be publishing and I have been waiting for years for these books.

Best of luck to you

Its been 3 years. To say ridiculous is an understatement. You should look for another publisher or e publish it yourself. I know you are avoiding answering all the complaints about the time it is taking because there is no update to give. I have to agree with a previous post...after I read your conclusion to this series I will not be buying anything published by TOR.

I agree. Tell this to TOR: I am part of a group of people who are on the verge of never buying any TOR books again, and informing others to not buy TOR books, if they cannot get Book 2 out... WITHOUT cutting most of it. And we are very serious. I mean, seriously, 3 YEARS? What kind of circus are they running? A clown show?
Sincerely, a very furious fan.

Hi I'm a relatively new fan to your works. I've only read Crown of Vengeance. You released that in 2012. It is currently 2016. This is unsatisfactory in the extreme. Your publisher seems to have picked up some George R.R. Martin Syndrome if the release schedule keeps up as it has been. Please send my regards to your infernal publishers over at Tor. Please tell them to get a move on this series because it has all the right ingredients for a best seller. If they do not send them a revised manuscript including an extremely liberal peppering of "Celiphrandullias-Tildorangelor"'s for ease of reading.
Regards, an indignant fan.

Hello. I've been reading that you were scheduled to release book two sometime last year. I am 200 pages into book one, and don't want to get excited if you won't be releasing book two. Please say you're almost done with book two?

I received the first book of the Dragon Prophecy series as a gift back in 2012 as a graduation gift. I loved the world so much I had to also get the Obsidian series and have been waiting for the sequel ever since. I was dismayed at the news that it was your publisher who was blocking further progress to this amazing world that you created.

Is it possible to write to the publisher to try to make them allow you to peruse this work? They should be reminded that it is the fans who buy the books, so the publishers personal preferences should not be a factor. If you think this would help, what is the address and addressee I would write this letter to?

Best wishes!

Hello,

I am sure you are very tired of hearing this but seeing as it has been 4 years since the book was released (and I have been a fan for so many years I don't think I have ever had to wait this long before) I was hoping that there was an update on a release date. Fingers crossed I am hoping for and rough idea. Thanks!

Hello...

So I'm not sure if this forum is still even in use... but I couldn't find any other way to get the answer to my question, after googling around the place for about 5 minutes. I recently stumbled upon your series and have fallen in love with the books, I'm probably 90% through the second and have the third waiting to be started. But I was wondering if when it was all said and done after book 3, are you planning on creating more?

Thanks

Thank you for this series, I love what you two have done with the Obsidian World. I can't wait to read more about the Great War!
